Let’s talk about electric fences for dogs!
Electric fences can give peace of mind for containing dogs, but they work best when you're actively supervising your pet.
Why Presence Matters
An electric fence doesn't stop everyday nuisance behaviors like digging, excessive barking, or fence-charging, which can turn your dog reactive over time. Without you there, high-drive dogs in prey or defense mode often ignore the shock and bolt through, risking dog fights, getting hit by cars, or worse fatal accidents for the dog or even a driver.
Real Risks Unattended
Dead batteries or fence line breaks create opportunities dogs exploit, turning a "contained" pet into a runaway with the same dangers. No containment system is a babysitter, dogs need eyes on them, whether indoors or out, unless crated (after proper crate training).
A Neighbor's Close Call
One neighbor's dog charged at a lady walking two dogs, likely due to a dead battery or ignoring the fence. She skillfully contained the situation, secured the escapee in its backyard fence, and alerted the owner but it could have ended in bites, fights, or injury. True stories like this highlight why supervision trumps reliance on tech.
Better Solutions
